As Solid As The Rock of Ages

In the Lord I take refuge. How then can you say to me: “Flee like a bird to your mountain. For look, the wicked bend their bows; they set their arrows against the strings to shoot from the shadows at the upright in heart.  When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?”  (Psalm 11:1-3)

You’re only as safe as the foundations under your feet. Your only as safe as the joists that hold up the floor that your standing on right now; as safe as the foundation that holds up the building your live in everyday; as safe as the footing that holds up the foundation that holds up the foundation that holds up the building that holds up the floor joists that you’re standing on.  People and whole buildings can suddenly disappear into a sink hole and never be found again. That is what’s so frightening about an earthquake; all the foundations under your feet suddenly give way, all can be lost in a moment of time.  No matter how strong, how stable the thing you’re standing upon, like a sink hole, like the weakest link, all comes tumbling down with it unless the foundstion is secure.

Like termites, the devil is always trying to whittle away at the foundations of our homes and churches and schools and social structures. Like a constant drum beat that never seems to stop;  they continually oppose the works of God. Where does it all begin? By Satan’s striving to undermine our faith in God’s promises; by try to shake our confidence in the authority of His Word. Well, there is nothing new under the sun and David’s short answers are wonderful sources of strength for us each day.

Trust in the LORD (Psalm 11:1)–He has not forsaken us (Psalm 9:10), and we can “taste” and see that God is good (Psalm 34:8). No matter what happens, God knows what we need, and He promises that we will be taken care of (Psalm 37:3). If we trust in Him and do not lean on our own wisdom, God promises to direct all of our life decisions (Proverbs 3:5-6).

The LORD is on His throne (Psalm 11:4)–The picture of God’s majesty can be easily lost in our sin-cursed world. If we are not going to be overwhelmed by the wicked, we must see God “high and lifted up”(Isaiah 6:1), surrounded by the great host of heaven, recognizing that “heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool” (Isaiah 66:1).

The LORD sees everything (Psalm 11:4-5)–His “eyes behold the nations” (Psalm 66:7) and He “knows the thoughts of man” (Psalm 94:11). There is no place that will hide us from His sight (Psalm 139:7-12).

The LORD judges everything (Psalm 11:5-6)–God loves justice (Psalm 37:28) and will finally come to judge the earth (Psalm 96:13). Matthew 7:25) —“The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.” (NIV)

One day, everything that can be shaken will be shaken, and most of it will fall like Lucifer from heaven,  never to rise again. But that which is built on the Word of God will never fall; it shall abide forever.

He who sits on his unshakeable throne shall laugh at those who think otherwise.

Christ is the rock of our salvation and He’s  only a prayer away!
