What’s in a name? Shakespeare tells us that there is nothing in a name. He says if a rose was called by any other name, it would smell just as sweet. In a sense, however, he is wrong. If I were to give you a signed check for 1 million dollars, it would be worthless, but a similar check signed by the name Gates or Buffet it would be of much greater value.
Names do mean something. When you hear the name Moses, you think of a great leader and law giver. When you think of Solomon, you think of wisdom and wealth. The name Henry Ford makes you think of automobiles and industry. Yes, names do mean something. But today I present to you the greatest name that was spoken upon this earth. A name lisped by babes, praised by great men, and whispered by dying men. It is the wonderful name of Jesus! The Bible says “God has highly exalted Him, and given Him a Name above every name, that at the Name of Jesus, every knee should bow and every tongue confess that He is Lord.” Now why is the name of Jesus above every other Name?
First of all, because His Name is a “Saving Name”. Before Jesus birth the angel said to Joseph: “You shall call His Name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins.” Jesus was a teacher, a preacher, a healer, an example, but primarily he was and is a “Savior.” He says: “Look unto me and be saved all the ends of the earth.” “I have come to seek and to save you who are lost.” The apostle Paul said: “This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.”
Millions can look back upon there lives: once they were on the downward path of sin . They despised the things of Christ and His church. But now, all that is changed. They love the things they once hated, and hate the things they once loved. What created the change? It was the “saving” Name of Jesus.
The Name of Jesus is above every name also because: It is a Precious Name. “To you therefore which believe, He is precious”. The Bible says, to those who do not believe, Jesus is not precious, but to those who do believe, He is! He is most precious to His own. Someone asked the great scientist Sir James Simpson: “What is the greatest discovery you ever made?” And the humble Christian answered,” My greatest discovery came, when I learned that I was a sinner, and that Jesus Christ has become my Savior. His Name is precious to those that believe, because they know He has taken their sins away. His Name is precious to those that believe, because he is still taking their sins away. The sins that they commit day by day. His Name is precious to those that believe, because He is preparing a place for them called heaven.
Jesus himself said: “I go to prepare a place for you, and if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself, that where I am, you may be also.”
And last of all, the Name of Jesus is above every name, because it is a Conquering Name. Through Jesus Christ we conquer our three greatest enemies, and fears; sin, death and hell. The person with Christ in their heart is more than a conqueror!” They can say: “O death where is thy sting, O grave where is thy victory?”
Christ’s victory over sin, death, and hell becomes our victory, the moment we accept Him as Savior.
Let me ask you today: Have you ever asked Jesus to become your Savior? Listen to these words: “ If you have never personally invited Jesus into your heart, put everything else aside, and do it Now. For nothing is more important than this. Call upon the Name of Jesus today, and let Him save you. Remember,
“What shall it profit a man if he should Gain the whole world and lose His own soul.”
He’s Only a Prayer Away,
