God created angels in eternity past and as far as I understand scripture he is not making any new ones. We are not told how many angels there are but because there is a fixed number, I am sure they measure in the billions.

When I read in II Kings 19:35 that in one night one angel killed 185,000 of Israels fiercest enemies, I am sure that with angel(s) the servants of God watching over us we have nothing to worry about. Angels may be very wise, but the Bible emphasizes their strength and their worship of God.

Regarding their strength we see that they are warriors. Away with the conception that angels are little pot-bellied cherubs with wings and magic wands that can do amazing tricks. Instead they are mighty warriors. Do not fear the power of the devil for Revelation 20:1-3 tells us that it will take but one angel to cast Lucifer and his imps into the lowest regions of hell.

“ Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years; and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. “

The main reason for their existence is to glorify God. They worship him around his throne, they strengthened Jesus in Gethsemane, they showed up at Bethlehem’s manger. In Isaiah chapter six we see that they love him so much they just cannot stop praising him.

Regarding his will their greatest will is to do his will. They deliver messages from God to the ears of men. They only say what God wants them to say. They strengthen, they warn, they perfprm miraculous signs. But they never stay very long.

As God created angels to worship him so he has created us to do the same.

Isaiah the prophet had a vision of sinless angels worshipping the Lord in heaven.

“I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of His robe filled the temple. Above it stood seraphim; each one had six wings: with two he covered his face, with two he covered his feet, and with two he flew. And one cried to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts; The whole earth is full of His glory!” (Isaiah 6:1-3)

This but a snapshot of what it will be like in heaven when every blood bought Christian shall stand before the throne of God, and sing the song of redemption that even angels cannot sing.

Start praising him right now and get tuned for that first day in heaven day that shall turn into eternity, and we shall praise him forevermore.

Respectfully,

Dr. Robert Bryant
