“Lest We Forget!”
As Memorial Day 2025 approaches, thousands of Americans are deployed around the world in the uniformed services of the United States. It is important to remember that honoring our fallen soldiers and veterans goes hand in hand honoring those who currently serve and put their lives on the line.
I have had some of the most profound experiences in my life while visiting military cemeteries. A lump forms in my throat as countless thoughts flood my mind about the bravery, the pain, and the many young lives sacrificed for our freedom.
Just hours ago, I had the privilege of listening to President Trump’s inspiring speech to the West Point graduating class, reminding us that the gift of freedom is truly invaluable and comes at a significant cost.
How often have I said to myself, as well as to my family and friends, “Freedom is not free!” The solemn call of gratitude resonates louder than words as you look upon row after row of simple white markers that proclaim the true cost of freedom.
It is important to remember in our prayers the families whose grief is profound and recent. Let us not allow Memorial Day to pass without honoring them. There are spouses, parents, children, brothers, sisters, and friends grieving by the thousands for our troops who have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. While we celebrate our freedom, we need not feel guilty about it. However, let us not forget the sacrifices that were made. All across this nation, the fallen rest, along with many of their comrades, whose graves now lie in foreign lands. The 6,000 soldiers who have died and the 43,000 who have been wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan (to date) represent a debt we can never fully repay.
These were the words of poet Will Carleton, speaking of the Civil War dead: “Cover them with beautiful flowers, deck them with garlands, these brothers of ours, lying so silent by night and by day.”
Memorial Day is so much more than just a holiday; it’s a heartfelt observance that brings us together as a nation. It’s a time to reflect on the incredible sacrifices made by our brave soldiers, sailors, and airmen who have dedicated their lives to the vital cause of liberty. Right now, courageous individuals are defending our freedom, reminding us of their ongoing commitment. The stories of our fallen heroes and those currently serving resonate with courage and selflessness. From the valiant Minutemen at Lexington and Concord to the dedicated men and women in uniform today, we celebrate their proud legacy and the enduring spirit of service that unites us all. Let’s honor their sacrifices with gratitude and respect!
On this day many will visit the Memorials in the nation’s capital. These magnificent structures are eloquent reminders of the human cost for liberty paid by lives laid down in battle. Every local memorial and cenotaph is an important statement to us all not to forget for otherwise succeeding generations would forget.
Wishing everyone a joyful and meaningful Memorial Day! As we celebrate, let’s take a moment to honor the brave soldiers, sailors, and airmen who have selflessly defended our land, sea, and sky. They’ve safeguarded our families, churches, institutions, and freedoms. Together, let’s cherish their sacrifices and hold their memory close to our hearts! Enjoy this special day with gratitude and joy!
God Bless America and God Bless You!
